How to Start Yoga
in Lisbon

Beginner yoga class in Lisbon

Starting yoga for the first time can feel daunting. What class do you choose? What do you wear? Will everyone else know what they're doing? In Lisbon, there's an extra layer: most studios teach in Portuguese, which adds an unnecessary barrier for anyone who isn't fluent.

This guide takes the guesswork out of it — so you can walk into your first class feeling prepared.

Start with the right class

Not all yoga classes are equal, and starting with the wrong format can put you off entirely. For beginners in Lisbon, we recommend:

Vinyasa Flow (LX Portal Flow)

A breath-led, all-levels class that flows at a welcoming pace. The teacher offers modifications throughout, so you can always find your version of each pose. This is the perfect starting point for most people.

Candlelight Flow

A slower, more restorative evening class in soft candlelight. Ideal if you want to start gently — longer holds, deeper stretches, no rush. Great for stress relief and better sleep.

We'd suggest avoiding Power Yoga or Barre Yoga as a first class — both are excellent once you're comfortable with basic movement patterns, but they can be overwhelming on day one.

What to bring (spoiler: not much)

At LX Portal, everything is provided. Premium Manduka mats, cork blocks, straps and all props are included free of charge. You don't need to buy a mat before trying yoga — that decision can wait until you know you love it.

Wear comfortable clothing that lets you move freely — leggings or shorts and a fitted top work well. You'll practice barefoot. A water bottle is a good idea; the studio has a changing room and bathroom.

What to expect in the class

Your first class will feel unfamiliar — and that's entirely normal. Yoga has its own language and rhythm that takes time to learn. Here's what will help:

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early so you can settle in without rushing
  • Tell the teacher it's your first class — a good instructor will check in with you
  • Focus on breathing rather than getting every pose perfect
  • If something hurts or doesn't feel right, come out of the pose
  • Rest in child's pose whenever you need to — it's always an option

Why English instruction matters for beginners

Yoga classes rely heavily on verbal instruction — breathing cues, alignment corrections, modifications. For a beginner, this is how you learn. If you're following a class in a language you don't speak, you lose all of this and are essentially just copying shapes.

At LX Portal, every class is taught entirely in English. This is especially valuable for beginners who are building the foundations of their practice — you can hear, understand and apply every instruction from your very first class.

The best way to start: the intro offer

Rather than committing to a membership before you know what you enjoy, LX Portal offers new clients 3 weeks of unlimited classes for €30. This gives you time to try every format — flow, pilates, sculpt, barre, candlelight — and find what works for your body and schedule before choosing a plan.

It's the lowest-risk way to start yoga in Lisbon. And if you fall in love with it (most people do), you can transition straight to a membership from there.
