Crow Pose (Kakasana)

Crow Pose Kakasana

This October, we're taking flight at LX Portal with Crow Pose (Kakasana) as our Pose of the Month.

Crow is one of the first arm balances many yoga students learn, and it can look intimidating at first. But Crow Pose isn't simply about having strong arms or being able to balance on your hands. It brings together strength, balance, mobility, coordination, focus, and confidence—making it a perfect pose to explore throughout an entire month of practice.

And you don't have to be able to do it on day one. That's exactly the point.

What Is Crow Pose?

Crow Pose, or Kakasana, is an arm balance where your body lifts away from the floor and your knees rest against your upper arms. Your hands become your foundation while your core, arms, shoulders, hips, and legs work together to keep you balanced.

Crow and Crane Pose (Bakasana) are often used interchangeably, although there is technically a difference. In Crow, the arms are generally bent and the knees rest on the upper arms, while Crane uses straighter arms with the knees tucked closer toward the armpits. Both variations develop similar skills and can be explored as part of your arm-balancing practice.

How to Practice Crow Pose

Start in a low squat with your feet close together and your knees open. Place your hands firmly on the mat in front of you, approximately shoulder-width apart, spreading your fingers to create a stable base.

From there, bring your knees onto your upper arms and begin to shift your weight forward into your hands. Rather than trying to simply jump your feet off the floor, think about leaning forward and allowing your center of gravity to shift over your hands. As your weight moves forward, your feet can begin to lift naturally.

Once you're balanced, draw your heels toward your sitting bones and engage your core. Keep your gaze slightly forward rather than looking straight down between your hands. Press actively through your palms and maintain control through your shoulders and upper body.

And remember: you don't have to lift both feet to practice Crow. Balancing with one foot hovering, using a block for support, or simply practicing the weight shift can all be valuable steps toward the full pose.

What Are the Benefits of Crow Pose?

Crow is a deceptively full-body pose. While your arms and wrists are supporting your weight, your core and legs are working hard to help you stay lifted and balanced. Regularly practicing Crow can help develop:

Upper-Body Strength

Crow challenges the arms, shoulders, forearms, wrists, and upper back, teaching you how to actively press into the floor while supporting your body weight.

Core Strength and Control

Your core plays an important role in lifting and stabilizing your body. Rather than relying entirely on arm strength, Crow teaches you to create a connection between your core, hips, and upper body.

Balance and Coordination

Finding Crow is as much about understanding weight distribution as it is about strength. You need to learn how far forward to shift, how to use your hands as a foundation, and how to make small adjustments to stay balanced.

That makes Crow an excellent exercise in body awareness and coordination.

Mobility and Flexibility

Crow also requires a deep squat and enough mobility through the hips, inner thighs, and hamstrings to bring the knees toward the upper arms. Working toward the pose can therefore encourage greater awareness and mobility in these areas.

Focus and Confidence

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of Crow has nothing to do with muscles.

For many students, the hardest part is trusting themselves enough to shift forward and let their feet leave the floor. Practicing Crow can teach patience, concentration, and the confidence to try something before you're certain you'll succeed.

Sometimes you fall. Sometimes you wobble. And sometimes, suddenly, you fly.

Your Crow Pose Doesn't Have to Look Perfect

One of our favorite things about working on a pose like Crow is that progress can look different for everyone.

Maybe your feet don't leave the floor yet. Maybe you can lift one foot but not the other. Maybe you can hold Crow for one breath. Or maybe you've been practicing for years and are working toward a more controlled entry or a new variation.

They're all steps forward.

Yoga isn't about forcing your body into a particular shape. It's about learning how your body moves, understanding what supports you, and developing strength and control over time.

Why LX Portal Has a Pose of the Month

At LX Portal, we don't want you to simply move through a sequence of poses and forget about them as soon as class ends.

We want you to actually learn.

That's why each month, we choose one pose to explore across all our classes. Rather than focusing on Crow once and moving on, you'll have opportunities throughout October to encounter the pose in different classes and contexts.

Our instructors can offer different cues, modifications, and ways to approach the pose depending on your experience level. Because our classes are small, they can also give you individualized feedback and help you understand what might be holding you back—or what you're already doing well.

The goal isn't necessarily to achieve a perfect Crow by the end of the month.

Instead, notice your own progression.

Maybe your wrists feel stronger. Maybe your balance improves. Maybe you become more comfortable shifting your weight forward. Maybe you finally lift one foot—or both. Or maybe you simply understand the mechanics of the pose better than you did four weeks ago.

Progress isn't always about getting further into a pose. Sometimes it's about feeling stronger, more confident, or more comfortable in the same pose.

Come Practice Crow With Us This October

Throughout October, keep an eye out for Crow Pose in your LX Portal classes. Try it, modify it, wobble, laugh, and try again.

You might surprise yourself with how much can change in just a few weeks of consistent practice.

Come to class. Keep practicing. And see where your Crow takes you.
