How to Make New
Friends in Lisbon

Friends meeting and connecting in Lisbon

Moving to a new city is exciting. Visiting somewhere new can be even more exciting. But whether you're spending a few days in Lisbon or planning to stay for a while, there's one thing that can make the experience so much better: having people to share it with.

Lisbon has a naturally social atmosphere, but meeting people doesn't always happen automatically. If you're new to the city, travelling solo, or simply looking to expand your social circle, the best way to make connections is to put yourself in situations where conversation happens naturally.

Here are a few of our favourite ways to meet people and make new friends in Lisbon.

1. Start with an activity where people actually talk

One of the easiest ways to meet people is to join an activity where you're already doing something together. It takes away some of the awkwardness of approaching a stranger because you already have something in common.

And you don't necessarily need to go to a traditional networking event or organised "meet and greet." Sometimes the best connections happen when you're simply sharing an experience.

Try a Yoga Brunch at LX Portal

If you're looking for a relaxed way to meet people in Lisbon, Yoga Brunch at LX Portal is a great place to start.

The event begins with a welcoming yoga class, giving everyone a chance to move, relax and enjoy a shared experience. Afterwards, everyone gets together over brunch — which is where the real socialising begins.

There's something about sitting around a table, sharing food and chatting that makes it much easier to get to know people. Instead of trying to make small talk with someone you have never met, you've already shared a class and have plenty to talk about.

It's particularly nice if you're travelling solo or are new to Lisbon because you can arrive on your own and still have a natural opportunity to connect with other people.

Come for the yoga. Stay for the brunch — and maybe leave with a few new friends.

2. Find your people through Meetup

Meetup is another great option if you want to find activities and communities based on your interests.

Rather than searching specifically for "ways to make friends," think about what you actually enjoy doing and find groups around those interests. You're much more likely to connect with people when you already have something in common.

Go to an English-language comedy night

If you love comedy — or simply want an easy, low-pressure way to spend an evening — check out Lisbon Comedy on Meetup.

The group organises stand-up comedy events in English throughout Lisbon. Whether you're a comedy fan or curious to attend your first comedy show, everyone is welcome.

The format makes it easy to socialise: grab a drink, watch a show, laugh together and start a conversation afterwards.

The shows are in English and may include adult or edgy topics, so keep that in mind if you're sensitive to certain subjects.

Drinks + comedy + a room full of people who also want to have a good time = a pretty good recipe for meeting someone new.

3. Join a running club

If you'd rather meet people while being active, look for running groups in Lisbon.

Running clubs are particularly good for newcomers because you don't need to arrive knowing anyone. You simply show up, run together and often grab a coffee or drink afterwards.

Many groups have different paces and distances, so you don't necessarily need to be a serious runner either. Search Meetup for Lisbon running groups and find one that fits your level.

And if you find yourself going regularly, you'll naturally start seeing the same people — which is often how acquaintances turn into actual friendships.

4. Get outside with a hiking group

Lisbon is surrounded by beautiful places to explore, from coastal trails to the hills and natural landscapes around the city.

Joining a hiking group through Meetup can be a great way to see a different side of Portugal while meeting people at the same time.

The longer format of a hike is also ideal for conversation. You're walking alongside someone for hours, rather than trying to make small talk for five minutes at a bar.

It's an especially good option if you're new to Lisbon and want to meet people while discovering places you might not find on your own.

5. Don't wait for the "perfect" opportunity

One of the biggest mistakes people make when they're new to a city is waiting for friendships to happen naturally.

Sometimes they do. But more often, making friends requires putting yourself out there a little.

Go to the class even if you don't know anyone. Say yes to the Meetup event. Join the running group. Sit next to someone at brunch. Ask someone where they're from or how long they've been in Lisbon.

You don't need every interaction to turn into a friendship. You just need to create enough opportunities for the right ones to happen.

Make Lisbon feel a little more like home

Whether you're here for three days, three months or three years, finding your people can completely change the way you experience Lisbon.

Try something you've never done before. Find a community around something you enjoy. And choose activities where connecting with people feels natural rather than forced.
