Tree Pose (Vrksasana): Benefits, Alignment Tips, and How to Improve Your Balance

Have you ever noticed how a simple yoga pose can feel completely different from one day to the next? Tree Pose is a perfect example. Some days you feel steady and grounded; other days, even keeping one foot lifted seems like a challenge.

Tree Pose, or Vrksasana, is one of the most recognizable standing yoga poses. It looks simple, but it asks you to combine balance, strength, focus, and patience — making it a wonderful pose for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

At LX Portal, our boutique yoga studio in Lisbon, Tree Pose is our Pose of the Month for November. Throughout the month, we'll revisit this balancing posture in class, giving our students the opportunity to practice, receive personalized guidance, and notice their progress over time.

Whether you're new to yoga or looking to deepen your practice, here's everything you need to know about Tree Pose and why we love it.

What Is Tree Pose (Vrksasana)?

Tree Pose is a standing balancing posture inspired by the stability and groundedness of a tree. In Sanskrit, Vrksasana combines vrksa, meaning tree, with asana, meaning posture.

In the pose, you stand on one leg while placing the sole of your other foot against the inner ankle, calf, or thigh of your standing leg. Your hands can rest together at your chest or reach overhead like branches.

Although the position looks straightforward, Tree Pose challenges your body to make constant small adjustments to maintain stability. Your feet and ankles work to keep you upright, your core helps stabilize your torso, and your attention stays focused on the present moment.

The goal isn't to become perfectly still. It's to find steadiness while allowing your body to move naturally.

How to Do Tree Pose Step by Step

You don't need to be flexible or have years of yoga experience to practice Tree Pose. Start with a variation that feels comfortable and build from there.

1. Begin in Mountain Pose

Stand tall with your feet grounded on the mat. Relax your shoulders, lengthen your spine, and distribute your weight evenly across your feet.

2. Shift Your Weight to One Leg

Slowly transfer your weight onto your left foot. Keep a gentle bend in your standing knee rather than locking it, and engage the muscles around your hips and core to support your balance.

3. Position Your Lifted Foot

Bend your right knee and turn it outward from the hip. Place the sole of your right foot against your inner left ankle or calf, or higher up against your inner thigh if that feels comfortable. Avoid pressing your foot directly into the side of your standing knee. If you're still developing your balance, you can keep the toes of your lifted foot on the floor with the heel resting against your ankle.

4. Find a Steady Gaze

Choose a stationary point in front of you and keep your gaze gently focused on it. In yoga, this is known as drishti. A steady gaze can help you maintain balance and avoid unnecessary distractions.

5. Bring Your Hands Together

Bring your palms together in front of your chest. If you feel stable, you can extend your arms overhead, keeping your shoulders relaxed. Imagine reaching upward through the crown of your head while grounding down through your standing foot.

6. Breathe and Switch Sides

Continue breathing naturally as you hold the pose for several comfortable breaths. When you're ready, slowly lower your lifted foot, return to Mountain Pose, and repeat on the other side. Remember that each side of your body may feel different. That's completely normal.

What Are the Benefits of Tree Pose?

Tree Pose offers more than a balancing challenge. Practiced regularly, it can help develop several important aspects of physical and mental awareness.

1. Improves Balance and Stability

Standing on one leg challenges your body's balance systems and encourages the small muscles around your feet, ankles, and hips to make continuous adjustments.

Over time, regular balance practice can help you feel more stable and coordinated during yoga and everyday activities.

2. Strengthens the Legs and Core

Although Tree Pose isn't a high-intensity strength exercise, maintaining the position engages the muscles of your standing leg, including your calves, thighs, and hips.

Your abdominal and trunk muscles also work to keep your torso upright and stable. This makes Tree Pose a useful addition to a well-rounded yoga practice that develops strength alongside mobility and control.

3. Encourages Hip Mobility

The lifted leg rotates outward from the hip, creating an opportunity to explore hip mobility in a controlled, standing position.

The important distinction is that the movement should come from the hip rather than forcing the knee into position. Your foot can stay low on your standing leg if that allows you to maintain comfortable alignment.

4. Develops Focus and Concentration

Balancing requires attention. As you practice Tree Pose, you learn to notice where your weight is distributed, how your body responds to small movements, and whether you're holding your breath without realizing it.

Returning your attention to your gaze and breathing can make the pose feel like a moving meditation — a moment to step away from your to-do list and focus on what you're experiencing right now.

5. Builds Patience and Confidence

Tree Pose is a reminder that progress isn't always a straight line. You might hold the pose comfortably one day and wobble the next.

Rather than treating every wobble as a mistake, you can learn to respond with curiosity and patience. Each attempt gives you an opportunity to understand your body a little better.

With consistent practice, you may notice that you can stay balanced for longer, recover more easily when you wobble, or feel more comfortable trying a new variation.

Tips for Finding Your Balance in Tree Pose

If Tree Pose feels difficult, you're not alone. Balance is a skill that develops through practice, and small adjustments can make the experience much more accessible.

  • Keep your lifted foot lower. Start with your toes on the floor or your foot against your inner ankle. There's no need to lift it higher until you feel ready.
  • Use a wall for support. Practicing near a wall can help you feel more secure while learning the pose.
  • Keep breathing. Holding your breath can create unnecessary tension. Let your breathing stay steady and natural.
  • Relax your shoulders. Focus on lengthening through your spine without lifting your shoulders toward your ears.
  • Let yourself wobble. Tiny movements are a normal part of balancing. You don't need to eliminate every movement to practice successfully.
  • Practice both sides. Notice any differences in stability, comfort, or range of motion without judging yourself.

Most importantly, don't compare your Tree Pose to someone else's. The best version of the pose is the one that works for your body today.

Why Is Tree Pose Our November Pose of the Month at LX Portal?

At LX Portal, we believe yoga is about more than moving through a sequence of poses. It's about learning, developing body awareness, and discovering what your body can do with time and consistent practice.

That's why we introduced our Pose of the Month. Each month, we choose one pose for our instructors and students to explore throughout their regular classes. Instead of practicing a posture once and moving on, we return to it over several weeks, creating opportunities to build familiarity, ask questions, and work on technique.

Tree Pose is a wonderful choice for November because it offers something for everyone. Beginners can explore the foundations of standing balance, while more experienced practitioners can refine their alignment, experiment with arm variations, or challenge their stability in new ways.

Small Improvements Add Up

When you revisit the same pose throughout the month, you can begin to notice changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Perhaps you can hold Tree Pose for a few more breaths. Maybe you feel more stable on your less familiar side, or you can recover from a wobble without immediately putting your foot down.

You might even discover that the pose feels easier because you're less focused on getting it right and more comfortable paying attention to your body.

These small milestones are worth celebrating. Progress doesn't always mean achieving a more advanced variation — sometimes it means feeling more confident, moving with greater control, or understanding how to make a pose work for you.

Learn with Personalized Guidance

At LX Portal, our instructors offer alignment guidance, modifications, and individualized feedback to help you explore each pose at your own pace.

You don't have to be flexible, spiritual, or experienced to belong here. You just have to show up.

Throughout November, we invite you to explore Tree Pose with us, notice what changes from week to week, and enjoy the process of learning rather than focusing only on the final shape.
