Yoga for Expats in Lisbon:
What to Expect

Yoga class in Lisbon for expats

Moving to Lisbon is exciting — but settling in takes time, especially when it comes to finding your wellness routine. Yoga is one of the first things many expats look for, and the Lisbon scene has some quirks worth knowing about before you book your first class.

The language question

The biggest surprise for many expats: the majority of yoga studios in Lisbon teach in Portuguese. This can make following alignment instructions and breathing cues genuinely difficult — particularly for beginners who are still learning the vocabulary of yoga in their first language, let alone a second.

It's worth doing your research before turning up to a class you can't fully follow. In a city with a growing expat population, this is a real gap in the market.

LX Portal — built for the international community

LX Portal in Lapa was built with exactly this problem in mind. Every class — yoga, pilates, sculpt and barre — is taught entirely in English, by instructors who are expert communicators as well as skilled practitioners. The studio has become a genuine hub for Lisbon's expat community, with students from the US, UK, Ireland, Germany, Brazil, Australia and beyond.

Beyond the language, LX Portal offers something harder to find: a sense of community. When you're new to a city, finding a regular place to show up — where people know your name and you start to recognise faces — matters more than most people admit.

What to expect in your first class

  • Arrive earlyGive yourself 10–15 minutes before class, especially for your first visit. This lets you check in, choose your spot and introduce yourself to the teacher.
  • Everything is providedPremium Manduka mats, cork blocks and all props are included free of charge. You don't need to bring anything except comfortable, stretchy clothing.
  • Tell the teacher it's your first timeA good instructor will check in with you, offer modifications and make sure you're getting something out of the class. Don't be shy about this.
  • All levels are welcomeMost LX Portal classes cater to everyone from beginners to experienced practitioners. The teacher always offers easier and more advanced options for each pose.
  • Classes run for 60 minutesEnough to get a proper workout or a proper restore, depending on the format.

Which class to try first

If you're new to yoga, start with Vinyasa Flow (LX Portal Flow) or Candlelight Flow. Both are open to all levels and move at a pace where you can follow along without prior experience.

If you have a fitness background and want more of a workout from day one, Yoga Sculpt or Power Yoga will challenge you without needing prior yoga experience.
